Obtaining direct information about the electronic structure both in equilibrium and in the excited state is critical for understanding the fundamental physics in advanced materials. Soft X-ray spectroscopies and time-resolved pump-probe techniques are powerful tools that can be utilized to extract such important information directly. I will first present our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of graphene to reveal the peculiar dispersions of valence electrons and the band gap opening. I will then discuss our recent results on maganites to show how localized electronic ordering and its dynamics can be extracted via static and time-resolved resonant soft x-ray scattering (RSXS). Finally I will discuss my future perspectives of extending these spectroscopic studies to the time-resolved regime with controlled and selective excitation.
