Assistant Professor of Physics, in conjunction with Collegiate Fellowship
The Department of Physics at the University of Michigan invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track Assistant Professor position in Physics, which may be optionally preceded by an appointment for up to two years as an LSA Collegiate Fellow, depending on the desires of the applicant. We seek theorists or experimentalists working in any area of current interest to the department. Appointments will start August 29, 2023. The University of Michigan LSA Collegiate Fellowship program is focused on promoting an intellectually rich and inclusive scholarly environment. We seek to recruit and retain exceptional early career faculty scholars, and to support outstanding scholars who are committed to working with college colleagues to build a diverse intellectual community. This faculty hiring initiative provides either one to two years of postdoctoral fellowship support in preparation for tenure-track appointments, or immediate tenure-track appointments in LSA departments. To date, 37 Fellows have joined U-M/LSA over four recruitment cycles, with an overall tenure track transition rate of over 97% as of September 2022. The program is open to all persons who meet the eligibility criteria, without regard to race, gender, ethnicity, or other identity characteristics. Candidates are required to have a doctoral degree in physics or a related field. The successful candidate is expected to establish an independent, externally-funded research program, and to contribute effectively to the Department's undergraduate and graduate teaching missions. Admin Asst (TEMP)
The Department of Physics employs nearly one hundred temporary student workers a term in such positions as Learning Assistants, Exam Proctors, and Graders. The role of the Student Staff Supervisor within Physics assists department administrators with tracking the performance of student employees, approving their time on a bi-weekly schedule, and assisting with questions regarding their appointment or responsibilities. This is a part-time, temporary position, for approximately 3-5 hours per week in the Fall term (August 29 - December 31) with possible renewal in the Winter term (January 1-April 30). The Student Staff Supervisor is required to meet monthly and maintain clear, consistent communication with the Physics Student Services Manager. They should also hold a minimum of one drop-in office hour a week in the Physics Help Room that is advertised to the student workers as a time to come and ask questions or address issues. No experience or knowledge in physics is needed. This position creates its own schedule in consultation with the Student Services Manager. This temporary position is hired under the Administrative Assistant title with an hourly rate of $15.00.
