Special Programs

Students are encouraged to pursue complementary studies in disciplines outside philosophy, thereby drawing on the strength of Michigan's many world-class departments. They may even pursue Master’s degrees in other academic departments, like Classical Studies, Linguistics, Mathematics, Political Science, Psychology or English, or may earn a Certificate of Graduate Studies in areas such as African American and Diaspora Studies, Complex Systems, Culture and Cognition, Environmental Justice, Latina/o Studies, Medieval and Early Modern Studies, Women’s Studies, just to name a few. Before officially adding another course of study to their program, students should consult with their relevant Philosophy advisor.

Program in Ancient Philosophy

The Program in Ancient Philosophy at the University of Michigan combines the strength of two of Michigan’s leading departments, Philosophy and Classical Studies, both of which have been consistently ranked in the top ten programs in their respective fields for decades.

Students in the program will pursue a PhD in either Philosophy or Classical Studies and an MA in the companion field. All of this can be achieved within the standard six years for each program. Learn more ›

Philosophy and Law

Students who gain admission to both the Michigan Law School and the Philosophy Department are able to pursue a joint J.D./Ph.D. degree, which typically takes seven years to complete. Combining work on these degrees will enable students both to substantially reduce the time usually required to earn the degrees separately, and to encourage meaningful integration of work in both fields. Graduates with both degrees are particularly well prepared for university teaching and research in both fields. Students must apply to both programs separately. Admission to both will require that the student consult with the DGS in Philosophy and the appropriate advisor at the Law School to design an appropriate plan of study. Learn more>
