Obscured behind concrete and razor wire, the lives of the incarcerated remain hidden from public view, yet prisoners all over the world engage in various kinds of artistic practice behind bars. Ashley Lucas, the child of a prisoner and a professor at the University of Michigan, works with currently and formerly incarcerated artists. In this talk she will perform pieces of her one-
woman play Doin' Time: Through the Visiting Glass, as she discusses the critical links between arts practice and incarceration. Lucas serves as Director of the Prison Creative Arts Project (PCAP) at the University of Michigan and will speak about the work that she, her students, and their collaborators do in Michigan prisons and beyond.
A reception will follow.
