Internship Information

Two main resources for internship opportunities are the Career Center and the LSA Opportunity HUB. Many students also find internships through their own personal contacts.

Current OS students may learn about some of the past internship experiences OS students have pursued by visiting the OS CTools site and reviewing the Summer Opportunities Packet.

Many students complete internships mainly for the experience, but if you wish to or are required to receive academic credit for an internship, there are three methods available:

  • ORGSTUDY 299 (1 credit; CR/NC): Undergraduate Internship (not counted toward OS major requirements)
    • It is preferred that students notify the OS advisor prior to starting the internship
    • The internship must total at least 320 hours overall in order to receive OS 299 credit.
    • Your supervisor must send an email to the OS advisor at the conclusion of the internship indicating that the internship was completed with 320+ hours worked.
    • After receiving the confirmation letter, the OS advisor will create a permission for you to register on Wolverine Access. Unless you indicate otherwise, the permission will be entered for Fall term following the internship, to avoid additional tuition charges for Spring/Summer.
  • ALA 225 (1 credit; CR/NC): Undergrad Internship (not counted toward OS major requirements)
    • This course is administered by the LSA Opportunity Hub, and details are available on their website.
    • ALA 225 requires fewer hours of internship work than OS 299 (minumum of 6 weeks at 25 hrs per week), but you *must* enroll prior to starting internship, and participate in the course online during the internship.
    • The Hub also offers an internship preparation course (ALA 125) and an internship reflection course (ALA 325).
  • ORGSTUDY 499 (1-4 Credits; graded): Independent Study (not counted toward OS major requirements).
    • This course requires that you find a faculty mentor and create an academic independent study project in conjunction with your internship. For more information, please read the Independent Study Guidelines (Indep Study link on left menu).
