The conference, Mapping the Mediterranean: Space, Memory, and the Long Road to Modernity,organized by Mediterranean Topographies under the leadership of Harry Kashdan and Pete Kitlas, took place October 11-12, 2013.   Participants came from the US, Canada, Europe, and the Middle East for sessions on travel and trade, memory, cities, and colonialism and postcolonialism.  A keynote panel included Yasser Elhariry (Dartmouth College), Gail Holst-Warhaft (Cornell University), Sharon Kinoshita (University of California, Santa Cruz), and Karla Mallette (University of Michigan).
