Appointments are made in each of the four participating units of the cluster: Department of Classical Studies (search in progress),  Frankel Center for Judaic Studies, Department of History of Art, and Department of Romance Languages and Literatures. Appointments are 100% in each unit.

Faculty participate in collaborative research and teaching projects, including a monthly research seminar.

Research Collaboration

Members of the cluster and members of the steering committee take part in a monthly research seminar in which they share their work in progress and discuss the emerging work in their individual areas. At the end of the academic year, they may hold a public conference or symposium devoted to a particular problem in Mediterranean relations (religion, trade, migration, etc.), and to which prominent figures from outside the University may be invited. Other opportunities for research collaboration are actively supported.


The cluster has a strong presence in the undergraduate curriculum. A team taught introductory course on cross-disciplinary approaches to the Mediterranean will be offered in winter 2015.

We encourage crosslinguistic and collaborative teaching, including "languages across the curriculum" and bilingual team-teaching.

Faculty teach relevant courses in their home departments.


The members of the cluster are strongly committed to mentoring assistant professors in the cross-disciplinary context of the cluster. A common mentoring plan encompasses discipline-specific mentoring arrangements organized by the units. A mentoring committee consisting of at least one mentor from each department meets regularly to discuss issues relating to the cluster and to co-ordinate mentoring activities. Mentors take part in the faculty's monthly research seminars, thus gaining familiarity with the research conducted by the cluster as a whole.

Each junior faculty member meets annually with his or her Chair to review teaching, research, and service in the context of progress to tenure. The Chairs of the participating units together discuss mentoring issues relating to the cluster as a whole, and review their individual and collective requirements of the faculty.

One member of the general mentoring committee from outside the candidate's department will be a non-voting member of the third-year review panel. The cluster works closely with CRLT (Center for Research on Learning and Teaching) on interdisciplinary and team teaching.
