Undergraduate Research Opportunities

Undergraduate Research Grant

These stipends are available for undergraduates with declared Linguistics majors and minors as a resource for funding their own research projects or traveling to conferences at which they are presenting. Whether writing a senior thesis, preparing a writing sample for advanced degree applications, or just looking to gain potential job experience, undergraduates can apply for money to defray research expenses on a rolling basis throughout the year. For substantial summer projects, a stipend will also be offered. This program expands upon the department’s current resources available for faculty- and graduate-student-initiated projects to include undergraduate-initiated research.

Applications for the summer stipend of $1,500 are due April 1 every year. Students can apply for this stipend and request coverage of research costs at the same time. In order to qualify for this stipend, though, a student must propose a significant research project, for instance, work that would take at least six weeks to complete. The student must meet regularly with a faculty or graduate student supervisor. Finally, the student must submit a written paper or report at the start of the Fall term. The grants available to students during the academic year will be accepted on a rolling basis and still require a supervisor. The semester funding only covers costs related to research and does not include a stipend.
