As part of the ongoing discussions around diversity and climate within the College, Robin Queen led a workshop devoted to issues of language and language discrimination within the university classroom. The workshop, which was held on Feb.7, was attended by 30 people from units across the College.


Does the language we use in the classroom have unanticipated consequences that shape student experience and campus climate? How might we be thinking more intentionally about language  and discrimination, multilingualism, regional and ethnic dialects, “political correctness” and  hate speech?
Robin Queen will present work and lead a discussion concerning the ways classroom language establishes social boundaries and categories, often in ways that frame race and ethnicity, class, gender and sexuality so as to authorize a broader context of discrimination.
