Tal Como Somos: Queer Latinidad

Tuesday, September 23, 2014
12:00 AM
West Conference Room - 4th Floor of Rackham Graduate School

Sponsored by Corazones Unidos Siempre, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Sorority Inc. & the Spectrum Center

Tal Como Somos: Queer Latinidad. Corazones Unidos Siempre, Chi Upsilon Sigma, Sorority Inc. & the Spectrum Center address what being Queer means, as an inclusive term, in order to educate people on campus so that they may better understand. In turn, that they may be able to articulate the difference between sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. Ultimately including how identifying as Latin@ further intersects with the societal construction and expectations of gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. The Spectrum Center will present a basic introductory workshop in order to provide everyone with the proper vocabulary and information to have a dialogue. Individuals will be introduced to terminology related to LGBTQ identities. A 15-20 minute portion of the film, Tal Como Somos: Just As We Are, will be screened in order to open up the discussion on identifying as both Latin@ and Queer. Finally, there will be a volunteer facilitated discussion and Q&A by individuals who identify as Latin@ and Queer, or have experiences and knowledge relating to Queerness. Food and light refreshments will be served.
