Urban Renewal and the Waco Alliance of Mexican Americans, 1958-1973

Drawing on his forthcoming book, Strength in Unity: Lyndon Johnson, Bob Poage, and Federalism in Central Texas (Texas A&M Press, 2014), Bob Duke links federal funding received by local officials in Waco, Texas in the aftermath of a devastating tornado and chronic flooding to the emergence of dynamic leaders in the local Mexican American community. When tensions arose with the Waco Independent School District over the needs of Mexican American students in the late 1960s, the Waco Alliance of Mexican Americans played a critical role in assisting the District to obtain federal funds to address bilingual education and other needs
