Border Collective Workshop

Wednesday, October 2, 2013
12:00 AM
3512 Haven Hall

Discussion of the 2010 book Performing Mexicanidad: Vendidas y Cabareteras on the Transnational Stage by Laura G. Gutiérrez. We will have copies of the book available in advance, please let us know if you would like one. The Border Collective is a group of graduate students and faculty at the University of Michigan that meets regularly to discuss the ways that art and politics intersect in cultural production related to physical and metaphorical borders. Although this group began in 2010 by focusing specifically on the U.S.-Mexico border, this year we are interested in broadening our focus to consider borders and spaces of all kinds, from the geopolitical to the interpersonal. Our meetings will also include an exploration of what we mean when we talk about borders, frontiers, and spaces. For further information contact Orquidea Morales @ obmora@umich.edu.

We will also be having a Skype conversation with Dr. Gutiérrez in October so this meeting is a great way to discuss her work before we include her in the conversation.

According to UTPress:

Performing Mexicanidad: Vendidas y Cabareteras on the Transnational Stage is An examination of the intersection of public discourses on sexualities with recent political, economic, and social shifts in the national context of Mexico and the Mexican diaspora in the United States.
