"Blood & Stone": Fortifications in the Save Hills, Benin West Africa. The Archaeology of defensive architecture in west Africa. 

The Save Hills were hit hard by raiders during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade (1600-1850), prompting its inhabitants to move to hilltop settlements and build an expansive network of ditches, walls, and ramparts.
