Woody Plants (EEB 436) has taught biology and identification of Michigan woody plant species for over 40 years. The past few years, however, have witnessed a revolution in electronic approaches to plant identification that have not been incorporated into the course. The goal of this project is to develop a web-based interactive electronic key to the 160 study species for use in the Woody Plants class. The key is based on a process of elimination of species that do not share specified plant characters. The key will be linked to species descriptions with detailed taxonomic information, geographic distributions based on University of Michigan collections, and photographs spanning relevant life history stages (e.g. sapling, flowering, fruiting). The interactive key will provide greater depth of knowledge of the study species and entrance into the realm of web-based taxonomy.
