The Animal Diversity Web ( is a large database of natural history designed as a resource for using inquiry-based activities in classes teaching ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. Querying tools now available work well for text and numerical data. We propose to develop and implement a metadata tagging system that will allow us to expand querying to include a very large existing collection of images of live animals and museum specimens. We will test the effectiveness of incorporating these materials in classes by developing a set of sample activities and testing them in 2 courses, EEB 51 and AnthroBio 465.
