The Department of Anthropology holds the Ford Collection of crania with trauma injuries and pathology, obtained from the Anatomy Department of the Medical School and owned by the Museum of Anthropology. We propose a pilot study to begin creation of an online data base for these crania within the University of Michigan digital library, with entries keyed to the crania that indicate the pathology or trauma of each specimen and include visual imaged of the specimen and the condition, with links to relevant literature about the condition. This will maximize the use of the collection in undergraduate teaching (osteology, functional anatomy, and human evolution courses) and individual research projects focused on pathology and/or trauma of the cranium. There are several atlases of pathology and trauma, but none that are keyed to the specific specimens in our collection, or linked to photographic images and relevant literature.
