This project pertains to the lecture component (4 hrs/week) of the course which teaches formal grammar as well as reading and listening strategies. As stated in the course description, it is presently in the discussion component of the course that students use the language in context. The current presentation method of grammatical concepts is lecture format, supported by PowerPoint presentations with students completing application exercises at home. This project will convert this teacher-centered format into a flipped classroom in which students will gain first exposure viewing the lectures and doing basic practice exercises as homework, and in which instruction time is spent more interactively in applying the concepts through individual and small group work. In this new learning environment, in-class activities to workshop grammar will range from closed-ended which check student comprehension of the material to more creative and collaborative assignments requiring use of the concepts in context. Real-time feedback will be provided from peers and the instructor.
