This course, Art and History, will be based on five significant moments in Spanish history: 1) the Battle of Navas de Tolosa (1212) in which the Christian forces acquired ascendancy over the Moors; 2) the Spanish Inquisition (1488), which altered Spanish society and culture; 3) the Surrender of Breda (1621) which signals the culmination of Spanish hegemony over Europe; 4) the Revolt of Madrid against French occupation (1808); 5)the Bombing of Guernica, the iconic moment of the Spanish Civil War. The point of departure for each segment will be a painting that depicts the event. We will analyze the painting for its artistic and historical content before moving on to the discussion of the period involved.
