1) You must obtain basic shop training and equipment-specific training before using this machine. You must wear safety glasses, appropriate PPE , and follow all shop rules.
2) Turn on the dust collector where available.
3) Roll sleeves up to the elbow and ensure no loose clothing will get caught in the sander while operating.
4) Make sure the belt or disc is free of material before starting the sander.
5) Make sure there is a minimum gap between the belt or the disc and their respective tables before starting the sander. Consult an Instrument Maker if adjustments are needed.
6) Make sure the belt covers/guards are in place before starting the sander.
7) Be certain the belt and disc are correctly mounted. The belt must track in the center of the drum. DO not operate any sander if the abrasive paper is torn. Consult an Instrument Maker if these problems occur.
8) Before turning on the belt sander make sure the material is not touching the belt.
9) Keep your fingers at least 1 inch away from the belt or disc.
10) When using the disc sander, sand only on the side of the disc that is moving DOWN towards the table.
11) Keep materials flat on the table while sanding. If materials require being held off the table, consult an Instrument Maker before proceeding.
12) Keep the stock moving across the belt or downward side of the disc to avoid wearing out, clogging, or burning a portion of the belt or disc.
13) Sand at a moderate rate. Do not force material into the belt or disc.
14) Small or irregular-shaped pieces should be held in a clamp, vise, or a special fixture. DO NOT use your fingers. Consult an Instrument Maker for advice.
15) PLEASE DO NOT SAND WOOD OR PLASTIC ON THE SANDERS IN THE STUDENT OR INSTRUMENT SHOPS. This could lead to a FIRE hazard.
16) When finished working on the belt/disc sander turn the machine off and remain in the area until the machine has come to a complete stop.
17) Brush or wipe off dust and residue from the machine once it has come to a complete stop.
