Do you believe in the importance of the humanities? Do you want to learn more about how exploring the humanities helps us to think critically and creatively? Would you like the opportunity to engage first-hand with humanities scholars and visiting artists, and to expose other students to the power of the humanities?

The Humanities Institute Undergraduate Engagement Group works to increase student awareness and understanding of the humanities on campus and to connect students with faculty, visitors, and other students who share an interest in the humanities. Students from humanities and non-humanities majors are encouraged to apply.

As part of the group, you will be an integral member of the Humanities Institute team. Group members have unique opportunities to connect with our faculty and graduate student fellows, visiting scholars, artists, and staff; to learn real-world event planning, organizing skills, and social media marketing skills; and to develop an understanding of the inner workings of an academic humanities organization.

The group has scheduled meetings once a month. Members also attend select Institute for the Humanities events and participate in other activities including social media engagement, writing blog posts, and event promotion.

Examples of previous activity include:

  • Lunch with visiting writer Yaa Gyasi
  • Live-tweeting during High Stakes Culture: What Does it Mean to Take a Knee?
  • Special guest presentations at the monthly meetings, including ones by visiting scholar of Timbuktu Shamil Jeppie and Humanities Institute Director, Professor Peggy McCracken.

To apply, submit this short application. Deadline is Friday, September 14. Questions? Email Stephanie Harrell sharrell@umich.edu.
