Each academic year, HSSP is proud to welcome back members of the program who have completed their first year in HSSP and have chosen to continue to give back to the program by returning as Peer Mentors or Resident Advisors.
Peer Mentors
Peer Mentors (PMs) are second-year students who actively support HSSP’s living-learning goals by mentoring first-year students, providing community leadership, and actively participating in HSSP community events. They help provide continuity in the HSSP experience by maintaining a high level of involvement in community activities while also encouraging first-year HSSP students to assume increasing levels of responsibility for HSSP functions. HSSP PMs are also important mentoring resources for first-years who are still becoming familiar with HSSP, Couzens Hall, and the greater U-M community. Finally, serving as a HSSP Peer Mentor provides the opportunity for students to build skills that can translate into further campus leadership opportunities. In addition, PMs are assigned a University faculty mentor based on their academic and professional interests.
Resident Advisors
Resident Advisors (RAs) are third- and fourth-year HSSP members who provide direct mentorship to all hall students, particularly assigned Peer Advisors. They help promote a warm, welcoming, and safe substance-free floor community. They lead one of the six programming committees that HSSP first-years are a part of, which plan events and other experiences that expand learning beyond the classroom.
