Events

Come see us in 1176 Angell Hall, just up the stairs and to the right of the front entrance's lobby.

Hopwood Tea, Thursdays from 3:30-5:00

Join us in the Hopwood Room for tea and conversation. Hopwood Tea is open to all, and happens every Thursday during the fall and winter terms — with occasional exceptions for special events! — from 3:30 PM to 5:00 PM.

See our events calendar for full details on upcoming Hopwood Teas.

Visiting Writers, Q&As, Roundtables, and more

Several times a year, the Hopwood Room hosts visiting writers for public Q&As and/or roundtable discussions. Many of these visits happen in partnership with the Zell Visiting Writers Series.

In addition to special events for visiting writers, the Hopwood Room hosts occasional Writing Aware sessions (a Helen Zell Writers' Program community discussion forum on issues of identity, intersectionality, and the craft of writing), semester-end readings for Creative Writing Minors, and other student-oriented programming. If you have ideas for programming that might have a good home in the Hopwood Room, click below on "Propose an Event."

For more information on upcoming events, please see our calendar.

Awards Ceremonies

Corresponding with the two cycles of awards given each year, the Hopwood Program holds Awards Ceremonies to celebrate each cycle's winners.

Our fall deadline awards — the Underclassmen Hopwood Awards — are celebrated each January with an awards ceremony and reading from a visiting writer.

Our winter deadline awards — the Graduate & Undergraduate Hopwood Awards — are celebrated each April with an awards ceremony and lecture from a visiting writer.

For more information on upcoming Awards Ceremonies, including exact dates, locations, and presenters, please see our calendar.

Propose an Event

The Hopwood Room is here for your use! If you are interested in leading a discussion, a group, a conversation, a reading, or if you have an idea for an invited guest, please reach out. We are invested in featuring more student- and community-led programming that furthers our mission and meets our community guidelines. Check back here in October 2018 for a link to our "Propose an Event" form, or if you have an idea before then, you can reach out directly to Program Manager Hannah Ensor at ensorh@umich.edu.
