Michigan News, Newsroom interns

Michigan News, the media relations unit under the university's Office of the Vice President for Communications, is seeking part-time students for the summer to assist in several areas of the newsroom. The Central Campus office, which consists of former journalists, promotes world-class research and faculty experts on big news of the day to help keep the university relevant in today's world. Students could accompany Michigan News public relations representatives on assignments to learn more about university communications. Depending on experience and interest, duties could include: Writing news releases; pitching stories to external media; assisting with news video production; assisting with social media graphics and posting on multiple Michigan News platforms; assisting with media at major events; tweeting in real-time at events; distributing news releases to media on a subscription service; producing a daily news clips report for internal distribution across campus.
Hours: 20-25 per week
$11 per hour

Ecology Center, Communication Intern

Qualifications:  The Ecology Center is a dynamic workplace which works on a wide range of issues, including climate change, environmental health and education, and recycling and zero waste.  This position will be engaged in many parts of this work.  Ability to quickly and flexibly engage with staff to assist with content development is key.  The organization publishes reports, issues press releases, develops content for development campaigns, and works to tell our story to the public, policymakers and other stakeholders.  We run a small lab and test consumer products for chemical hazards (HealthyStuff.org) and intern may development content for this project.   We work with a variety of software systems, so being an adaptable and quick learner is important.  Experience with Drupal (web content management) is a plus.  Our office is conveniently located in downtown Ann Arbor.

Responsibilities: The Communications Intern will be responsible for working with program and communications staff to implement our organizational goals. The Intern, depending on skills and interests, may be involved in content development for programs, development, special projects, web, and social media.

Michigan Quarterly Review, Editorial Internship and Marketing Interns

Michigan Quarterly Review (MQR) the University of Michigan's flagship literary journal publishes essays, interviews, memoirs, fiction, poetry, and book reviews.

Editorial Intern

MQR is seeking an Editorial Assistant to help MQR’s management administer the magazine’s business and in its production process.  

Duties will alternate among the following tasks according to need:

• Handle correspondence including special mailing projects
• Help set up and staff events
• Assist in maintaining subscription and contributor databases
• Assist with managing MQR archives
• Fill online orders
• Learn to work with Submittable to manage submissions
• Review accounts and help prepare billings
• Assist in preparing author contracts
• Field questions from authors
• Conduct research projects related to magazine content
• Respond to mailed submissions
• Upload print content into Word Press for the MQR website
• Other writing projects for the MQR website
• Assist in other publication-related tasks and arrangements

Required Qualifications

• Major or minor in English, journalism, or related field
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Strong organizational skills
• Excellent attention to detail and strong follow up skills
• Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and set priorities
• Proficiency in all Microsoft Office Programs  

Desired Qualifications

• Enthusiasm for the literary arts.
• Editorial or journalism experience.

Marketing Intern

MQR is seeking an Marketing Assistant to help MQR’s management administer the magazine’s business and in its production process.  Duties will alternate among the following tasks according to need:

• Help coordinate and staff MQR events around campus and in the community, for example: readings at Literati to launch new issues. Assist with live event coverage on social media.
• Assist editors with execution of the events calendar and assist with event logistics.
• Assist Online Editor with carrying out social media strategy across various platforms, including Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. Monitor social analytics to identify trends and growth opportunities; suggest ways to increase reach.
• Work with MQR editors to help market the magazine to three discrete groups: national audience; regional (Midwest) audience; and local (Ann Arbor) audience. Opportunities may include AWP, alumni newsletters, Hopwood newsletters, libraries, Parents’ Week, Ann Arbor Art Fair, Ann Arbor Art Center, Kerrytown Bookfest, Top of the Park, etc.
• Assist with various promotional efforts, including direct mail, national advertising, fundraising dinners, and charity events.
• Analyze sales data & other business/social insights as needed.
• Upload content and images to MQR's WordPress site as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the magazine editor.

Required Qualifications

• Major or minor in English, journalism, communications, or marketing
• Strong written & verbal communication skills with an eye for detail
• Strong social media skills; must have familiarity with Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram
• Strong organizational & follow-up skills
• Enthusiastic and creative with a passion for the literary arts
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and WordPress

The Ann Arbor District Library’s Public Library Associate program offers paid, practical experience for applicants looking to build their skills and knowledge in an exciting, fast-paced environment. The internships last for one year from date of hire, with an optional second year extension available to interns who excel in their work.

FLOW For the Love of Water, Communications Intern

Everything we do is reflected in our name: For Love of Water. The Great Lakes belong to all of us. Our mission is to safeguard the Great Lakes. Through our targeted policy initiatives and multi-media communications, FLOW has built key partnerships with state-level and regional environmental groups, leveraged our expertise to influence agencies and impact state and federal legislation, and grown to be a trusted source of current information for citizens and decision-makers on issues affecting our freshwater seas. Our office is located in the heart of the Great Lakes, in Traverse City, Michigan.

Position Summary: This is a paid internship. We are looking for a 3-month summer Communications Intern, but we are flexible.

Responsibilities: The Communications Intern will be responsible for original research and writing, including research and reporting on various Great Lakes water-related campaigns and topics, interviews, case studies, blogs, social media content, videos, photos, and more. Internal tasks also include updating lists of media and other key contacts.

Qualifications: The work of FLOW can be demanding and fast-paced. The applicant for this position will need to be flexible, a critical thinker, an effective researcher, and a compelling writer of scientific and legal information for a general audience. FLOW is looking for an individual with the ability to follow direction and work independently in an office setting in downtown Traverse City who possesses close attention to detail; strong writing, research, people, and telephone skills; and experience with the Internet, Google Docs and Sheets, and Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
