Funding Opportunities

There are numerous funding opportunities for current students through the English Department and the Rackham Graduate School.  All PhD students in the Language and Literature Program are guaranteed fellowship packages in their fifth year, as long as they apply through the various fellowship competitions.  The Graduate Office will e-mail the appropriate student groups, informing them of the steps needed to apply through the department for the first four Rackham fellowships listed below.

Funding Available through the English Department.

Conference Travel - The English Department offers funding for presenting at conferences, as well as postage funds and MLA travel funds for PhD students who are currently on the job market. Application forms are available on the forms section of our website.

Thesis Grant - MFA students in Creative Writing are eligible to apply for the Thesis Grant. This competition is held twice a year, with October 16 and March 5 deadlines. Grants of up to $1500 are given to do thesis research outside of Ann Arbor. Students may receive only one award during their tenure in the program. Second year MFA students are not eligible for the March 1 competition. Application forms are available on the forms section of our website.
