Major news in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts: Emeritus Professor Gérard Albert Mourou has won the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work in laser physics. Mourou shares the prestigious award with Canadian physicist Donna Strickland and former Bell Laboratories scientist Arthur Ashkin.
Mourou retired from the University of Michigan in 2005, where he was the director of Ultrafast Optical Science and co-director of the FOCUS frontier center.
