Facilitating Student-Faculty Partnerships in Course Design & Development
The LSA Undergraduate Course Consultants Program enables faculty members who are developing new courses or redesigning existing ones to enlist the help of undergraduate students. The LSA Dean’s Office developed this program after observing the experiences of LSA faculty who have worked with undergraduates on course design and development, in an effort to encourage new student-faculty partnerships along these lines.
The program provides funding for individual faculty members to hire one or more undergraduates as course-development assistants, for up to 150 total hours of work per faculty member. A given faculty member who is interested in this program would typically be responsible for identifying the undergraduate(s) with whom they wish to work. Faculty members who have hired course-development assistants in the past have often found good candidates for such a position among their own former students.
Undergraduate course consultants may partner with faculty in the design and teaching of courses in a wide variety of ways, including but not limited to:
- Compiling and reviewing reading lists for a course
- Collecting syllabi from similar courses at other institutions to inform the development of a course at U-M
- Creating annotated bibliographies for a course or advising about what content will be most engaging for their peers
- Composing homework problems, discussion prompts, and a range of other formal and informal assessments
- Assisting in the development of new assignments, activities, projects, or uses of classroom technology
- Performing background research for a course, including finding relevant case studies
- Scanning documents and other organizational tasks
- Assisting in marketing a course
- Sitting in on a course throughout the semester in order to observe classroom dynamics from a student’s perspective or provide peers advice on how to approach assignments and class time.

Note: Programs that offer other forms of undergraduate instructional assistance include the LSA Instructional Support Services BlueCorps Program and Community-Engaged Academic Learning’s Student Advisory Group on Engagement (SAGE). These are pre-assembled, trained teams of undergraduates dedicated to helping with particular kinds of course-development projects.
