Having long recognized dual career partner assistance as a crucial element in recruiting and retaining its excellent faculty, the University of Michigan and the College of Literature, Science and the Arts have developed one of the strongest dual career programs in the country.
Many faculty members who are being recruited by the University of Michigan have partners who are accomplished professionals in their own right. Therefore, the ability of a dual career partner to find a suitable career opportunity is a key factor in the recruitment process and ultimately in the couple’s decision. The LSA Dual Career Program was created in response to this important need, and is part of a partnership between the departments, LSA, the Office of the Provost, and schools and colleges across campus.
Over the years LSA has been enriched by the presence of partners who have joined our faculty and staff. The LSA Dean’s Office welcomes the opportunity to work with dual career partners, and is committed to helping them meet the career challenges they often face.
Services of the LSA Dual Career Program are offered to the partners of tenure-track or tenured faculty members. Prospective faculty members who have been invited to campus for an interview are encouraged to contact the office of Dual Career Services at 734-764-2430 to learn more about the services offered by this program. Those who have been offered a position in the College should inform the unit Chair/Director of their interest in accessing LSA’s dual career services.
The LSA Dual Career Coordinator is part of a campus-wide team that meets regularly with the Provost’s Office to share ideas about dual career opportunities and the potential for assistance. This team approach involves all the major schools and colleges on campus, and is a key component in the overall success of the program.
An Overview of Services
The LSA Dual Career Coordinator can assist with searches for academic or non-academic positions in the following ways:
- Consult with partners about the job search, help arrange informational interviews with UM and other area employers, and identify positions of interest
- Advise and consult on effective interviewing techniques
- Facilitate networking opportunities
- Provide up-to-date information about the local job market and area employers
- Facilitate the process for University employment
- Provide referrals for questions about immigration issues
In addition, the University is a member of the regional Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC), which has as one of its missions assisting faculty partners in securing employment. For partners interested in exploring a position at an academic institution other than the University of Michigan, the HERC website provides a powerful gateway to comprehensive information on current job openings at educational institutions across the State of Michigan.

Job Search vs. Job Placement
The success of any job search—and how long it takes— depends on such factors as the economy, the “fit” between a partner’s credentials and current job openings, and the initiative taken by the partner. Career searches are most successful when the partner takes the lead.
LSA’s Dual Career Program is committed to assisting partners in locating employment opportunities by offering information, personal assistance and support. The Dual Career Program is not designed for job placement, and does not guarantee employment.
Southeast Michigan is home to numerous employers in fields such as energy, health care, financial services, entertainment, and higher education, in addition to being the headquarters of the automotive industry. The area’s economy is diversified, affording opportunities in a wide variety of fields. Job availability, of course, varies by field and fluctuates with the economy. Partners willing to commute outside of Ann Arbor will find the widest range of opportunities.
