Compensation: This position is unpaid, however transportation fees to and from the office will be provided.
Responsibilities: Three distinct internship positions are available.  Each intern will have a program-specific supervisor.  Some of these definitions may be ‘fine tuned’ at the beginning of the internship.

  • Strategies for Hybrid Powertrains Intern (Simulation & Development of Optimum Control Strategies for Hybrid Powertrains in an Indian Automotive Application Scenario)
    • Optimization of a selected hybrid architecture is very important to the success of a hybrid program. The optimum control strategy for a hybrid vehicle may depend on various factors like speed patterns, terrain, density of traffic, customer specific usage behavior and many other aspects. Returns in terms of performance, fuel economy, emissions, cost and complexity will need to be evaluated and quantified. Effective methods for selection and optimum sizing of the battery and engine based on the above should be worked out. Optimization of battery usage based on varying climate conditions in different parts of India needs to be carried out. A feasible framework for dynamically modifying control strategies based on ‘learning’ customer behaviours after the vehicle is sold should be explored. Aspects comparing the design decisions unique to the Indian context versus design for other parts of the world should be covered.
  • Sensorless Vector (FOC) Control Strategy Intern (Simulation & Algorithm Development of Sensorless Vector (FOC) Control Strategy for EV’s)
    • Development of Sensorless Vector Control (FOC) strategy for EV’s and HEV’s is a Torque security critical to success any EV or HEV program. The Sensorless Vector control strategy is a further technological development of With-Sensor FOC control. However, if high performance is needed, vector control requires sensor feedback, e.g. incremental encoder on the motor shaft, so that the measured motor speed is fed back to the control loop. In the sensorless FOC, The motor speed is estimated by using mathematical models. The main aim of this operating stagey to be safety critical. The advantage of  using sensorless FOC is that in case of sensor signal loss while driving on highway or high terrain, the car can be driven further at a lesser speed, lesser performance and without any stoppage of the vehicle on the midway. Little loss of performance and efficiency is expected. Techniques can be invented to improve performance and efficiency. The possible techniques should be developed so that a complete sensor can be avoided for the EV’s and HEV’s.
  • Electric Car Alternate Energy Sources Intern (Alternate energy sources for Electric Cars: challenges and solutions)
    • As electric energy is the most ‘flexible’ form of energy and can be easily produced by different options directly from the incident energy on earth, that is sunlight, it will prevail as the energy source for automation, mechanisation, transportation and travel in future societies, even more than in the 20th century. There will be great shift from the present way of using internal combustion engines which converts the long-preserved underground natural oils which pollutes in addition to causing global warming! Naturally, all areas of travel and transportation will have either completely propelled electric drives or ‘electric assisted’ drives for generating the required mechanical force. This will even be true for ships and flights in addition to forms of daily commute.
    • Based on the above the study, we will explore:
      • Identifying all (of today's) natural sources of energy to convert into electricity
      • Identifying the core technologies which will convert generated energy into electrical energy
      • Ways to store energy, including grid tie
      • Ways of charging EVs in public places and remote residential locations
      • Making a few concepts to estimate the hardware cost
      • Estimating a price per unit to generate, initial investments and return of investment period for Indian conditions
      • Experimental work during the internship period will focus on solar energy and the study of factors affecting output
