The University of Michigan College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA) invites applications for the LSA Collegiate Postdoctoral Fellowship Program. LSA offers its students an outstanding undergraduate education in the liberal arts at a premier research institution, and is dedicated to building a diverse and inclusive scholarly environment. The purpose of the LSA Collegiate Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is to support exceptional scholars who are committed to diversity in the academy and to prepare those scholars for possible tenure-track appointments in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts at U-M.
The College seeks extraordinarily promising scholars whose research, teaching, and/or service will contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher education. The program is particularly interested in scholars with a demonstrated interest in bringing to their research and undergraduate teaching the critical perspective that comes from their non-traditional educational background and/or scholarly understanding of the experiences of groups historically underrepresented in higher education.
U-M will appoint recent recipients of the Ph.D. as postdoctoral fellows for a two-year term beginning August 1, 2018*. LSA Collegiate Fellows will receive a starting salary of $60,000 plus benefits, and $7,000 for conference travel and research expenses. During the two-year term of appointment, the fellow will participate in the LSA Teaching Academy during their first year, and teach one course a year in the host department. The remainder of the fellows’ time will be devoted to pursuing research. Each fellow will receive career advising from a mentor during their fellowship.
All fellows are expected to be in residence during the academic year and to participate in departmental seminars and related activities. LSA’s National Center for Institutional Diversity (NCID), will also organize and offer a number of activities designed to support Collegiate Fellows’ scholarship and professional career development, while building a community of scholars with commitments to issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
*Predoctoral fellowships may be available in economics and political science; doctoral degree must be completed by July 1, 2019. If approved, predoctoral fellows will receive a starting salary of $50,000 plus benefits, and $7,000 for conference travel and research expenses.
Applicants who will have completed the doctoral degree no later than July 1, 2018, and no earlier than January 1, 2015, are eligible to apply. Individuals awarded a Ph.D. from U-M or currently holding a postdoctoral or faculty position at U-M are not eligible.

A complete submission will consist of:
- Three letters of reference (Letter writers must submit letters of reference by October 16, 2017.)
- Research proposal that outlines your scholarly work and includes your research plan for the fellowship period (2-3 pages; references, citations, formulas, and graphics do not count toward the page limit).
- Personal Statement & Diversity Commitment that includes your demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion through scholarship/research, teaching/mentoring, or service/engagement; there may be some overlap with your research proposal and teaching statements (1-3 pages).
- Teaching statement that describes your teaching philosophy, which may incorporate experience from formal or informal teaching and mentoring opportunities (1-3 pages).
- Dissertation Abstract (1 page)
- Writing Sample (1–2 samples, 35 page maximum, e.g., sample publication or unpublished research paper, journal article, dissertation chapter; references, citations, formulas, and graphics do not count toward the page limit)

Review and Selection
Review committees will evaluate applicants in all eligible fields according to their potential for success in an academic career and potential to contribute to higher education through their demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in scholarship, teaching, and/or service.
Applications will be reviewed by the appropriate department(s)/program(s), College selection committee, and dean(s). Semi-finalists will be notified in mid-January 2018, and finalists will be invited to campus for interviews in late January and February. Fellowship awardees will be announced by March 2018.
