The Eisenberg Institute continues its Fall 2013 Thursday Speaker Series on October 24, 4 p.m., 1014 Tisch Hall, with Valerie Garver's lecture, "The Power of Cloth: The Roles of Clothing and Textiles in the Court of a Carolingian Ruler." The talk follows the Institute's 2013-15 theme, "Materials of History." Link for a lecture abstract. Free and open to the public.

Garver is Associate Professor of History at Northern Illinois University where she teaches medieval history and medieval studies. She is the author of Women and Aristocratic Culture in the Carolingian World (Cornell University Press, 2009). Currently she is working on a book project entitled, The Meanings and Uses of Dress and Textiles in the Carolingian World, c. 715 - c. 915.

On Friday, October 25, 12 p.m. in 1014 Tisch Hall, the Institute presents the workshop, "Marginal Material." The panel features Professor Garver, Noah Blan (Ph.D. Student in History, University of Michigan), Tiggy McLaughlin (Ph.D. Candidate in Greek & Roman History, University of Michigan), and Kate Silbert (Ph.D. Candidate in History & Women's Studies, University of Michigan); chaired by Deborah Dash Moore (Frederick G.L. Huetwell Professor of History, University of Michigan). Lunch provided. Free and open to the public.
