Prospective Students

Letter from the Director of Graduate Studies

The Department of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan is amongst the leading departments in the field, at one of the top-ranked universities in the world. Our Ph.D. program is highly selective, and provides unique opportunities for you to develop academically. We offer five years of support to those admitted, emphasize mentoring and collaboration with faculty, provide additional research and travel support to our students, and offer a host of professional development workshops and events.

Our Ph.D. program is internationally recognized in several areas of teaching and research, including Media Psychology, Political Communication, Critical Media Studies, and Global and Comparative Media. Students receive broad training in a range of both quantitative and critical/cultural methods and traditions; we encourage students to then choose the approaches that best suit their areas of interest. The program offers a solid foundation in media and Communication and Media while also permitting you to design a highly individualized program of study. Graduate students have opportunities to develop collaborative research projects with faculty members beginning in the very first year of the program.

We are deeply proud of current students, with growing lists of publications; and of recent graduates, hired at universities across the US and around the world.

The University of Michigan is a bustling, dynamic place. Ann Arbor is consistently ranked one of the best places in the country to live, boasting an extraordinary range of cultural, social, and scholarly events and activities.

On behalf of the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan, we look forward to working with you!
