Investigating the Greek-City-State in Ionia:
A New program of Archaeological Research at Notion

Christopher Ratté, Kelsey Museum

Notion in Ionia is a rare archaeological treasure: a well-preserved and almost completely unexcavated ancient city, lying on the Aegean coast of Turkey in close proximity to several other major archaeological sites, including Klaros, Kolophon, Teos, and Ephesos, and within easy reach of Kusadasi and Izmir. Notion was occupied from the early first millennium B.C. until the Middle Ages, and it played an important role in the history of the surrounding region in all periods, from the Ionian migration to the fall of the Roman empire. A program of systematic archaeological investigation of the site will shed light on these other issues, and lay the groundwork for the long-term conservation and management of the site.

FAST lectures are free and open to the public, sponsored by: the Interdepartmental Program in Classical Art and Archaeology and the Kelsey Museum of Archaeology
