The Archaeology of a Colchian Landscape: The Results of the Eastern Vani Survey
Famous as the homeland of Medea and the Golden Fleece, ancient Colchis was an important place in Greek and Roman mytho-historical accounts of the Black Sea. From these accounts, it has been argued that during the first millennium BCE an independent state known as Colchis existed in what today is western Georgia. The ancient site of Vani is on of the riches archaeological sites in Georgia and has placed a key role in arguments in favor of a Colchian state. This talk presents the results of a two-season survey project and places these results within the broader context of the archaeology of western Georgia.
