Layovers and Customs

Layovers

Can I leave the airport during layovers?

Yes, but be warned that you will need to go back through security check points when reentering the airport. Anddepending on the country, you might need to arrange a visa ahead of time. If you exit the airport at a layover, plan to have plenty of time to get through the visa process at the airport (if applicable) and to get back through security.

Do I need to claim my checked luggage during a Layover?

No, you do not need to claim your luggage during a Layover. When you arrived at your departure airport, staff marked your final destination on your luggage and that is where you claim your luggage in the baggage claim area. Once at your final destination, follow signs to baggage claim.

Technology

So I heard something about movies in flight?

You are often provided with your own screen to watch movies during your flight. However, sometimes you have to have your own device to watch movies, and you may need to download the app for United Airlines to get the inflight movie service. This varies from airline to airline. If you’re expected to use your own device to watch movies in flight, you’ll want to download the necessary apps beforehand and make sure that you have your device and your charger packed in your carry-on.

Do airplanes have wifi?

Many airplanes have wifi, but it often doesn’t work. Sometimes you have to pay for the service. Check with your airline before departure.

Customs

When do I go through customs?

Once you have arrived at your destination, follow signs to the customs area. The customs process can take time, and there are generally additional baggage security procedures. You might have to go through customs during a layover, especially if your layover is in the Schengen Area (which consists of most countries in the EU). For example, if your final destination is Paris, France, but you have a layover in Madrid, Spain, you will actually go through customs in Spain, not France. Then, when you arrive in Paris, you won’t go through customs a second time. You will be free to grab your bags from the terminal and leave the airport.
