Travel Destination Designations

All individuals traveling abroad with the University of Michigan must follow the U-M and (if applicable) LSA policies on International Travel, which include guidelines regarding U-M Travel Warning/ Restriction and Health Risk locations.

The LSA International Travel Policy applies to all CGIS students.

UM Travel Restriction Destinations

In restriction areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to extreme health, safety or security risks. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).

CGIS students are not permitted to travel to Travel Restriction destinations. There are no exceptions to this rule.

UM graduate students may travel to locations with Travel Restrictions for University-related purposes if they complete the requirements outlined on the Global Michigan website.

UM Travel Warning Destinations

In warning areas, travel for university purposes is unadvisable due to a significant level of health, safety or security risks. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Regular (annual) educational programs may be suspended.

The University of Michigan may decide to cancel or suspend programs in Travel Warning Destinations should conditions develop that warrant such action. The University of Michigan can evacuate students within a Travel Warning Destination if the need arises.

UM Travel Health High Risk Destinations

In Travel Health High Risk areas, travel for university purposes is generally prohibited due to high health risks. University-related travel for undergraduate students is prohibited. Students cannot be required to participate in activities in this destination. Evacuation of undergraduate students is required (and may be necessary for graduate or professional students).

CGIS students are not permitted to travel to UM Travel High Risk destinations. There are no exceptions to this rule.

UM graduate students may travel to locations with a Travel Health High Risk designation for University-related purposes if they complete the requirements outlined on the Global Michigan website.

UM Travel Health Medium Risk Destinations

In Travel Health Medium Risk areas, travel for university purposes requires extra precautions due to midlevel health risks.

The University of Michigan may decide to cancel or suspend programs in Travel Health Medium Risk Destinations should conditions develop that warrant such action. The University of Michigan can evacuate students within a Travel Health Medium Risk Destination if the need arises.

U-M Safety and Travel Health Plans

All travellers to Warning, Restriction, Health High Risk, or Health Medium Risk locations must complete either a U-M Safety Plan and Travel Health Plan to depart the country.

If going to a Warning or Restriction destination, complete a Individual Travel Safety Plan.

If going to a Health High Risk or Health Medium Risk location, complete a Individual Travel Health Plan.

If going to a country which is both a Warning or Restriction AND a Health High/Medium Risk location, you ONLY need to complete the Individual Travel Safety Plan.
