Student Employment Opportunities

The Center for Global and Intercultural Study is seeking students to serve as program assistants for its study abroad programs. Note: These positions are temp-hourly. Hours per week range from approximately 20-35.

Program Assistants Description

The Program Assistant works under the supervision of the Faculty Leader, serving as a liaison between faculty, students, and CGIS. Program Assistants help students interpret experiences related to intercultural learning and group dynamics, address student needs onsite, and perform a range of administrative duties.

Responsibilities may include:

  • Attendance at program leader/assistant training sessions

  • Assistance with student pre-departure orientations

  • Organization of student arrival and departure from the program site

  • Tracking student contact information and independent travel; encouraging students to enter this information into M-Compass

  • Assistance with coordination of on-site orientation, program-sponsored activities, and excursions

  • Conducting regular check-ins with participants

  • Encouraging students to engage their host culture and local people

  • Encouraging a positive learning environment and improved group dynamics

  • Facilitation of group reflections

  • Taking preventative actions to ensure the health, safety and welfare of all program participants and following CGIS health and safety protocol

  • Remaining available to respond to student emergencies during the program. This may include accompanying students to a medical facility, hospital, or police station, as needed

  • Informing CGIS and program faculty of problems as soon as they arise and submitting incident reports when necessary

  • Submitting weekly reports to CGIS with updates related to student check-ins, excursions/activities, health and safety, student issues, etc.

  • Preparation of a final report  summarizing the program and providing feedback

  • Other duties as assigned

CGIS currently seeks program assistants for the following programs.

Required Qualifications

  • Fluency in the language of the host country (Arts in Paris and Santiago de Compostela)

  • Language skills and/or travel experience related to the program location (GCC Programs)

  • Experience facilitating intergroup relations or participating in experiential and/or intercultural group activity

  • Experience working with students and faculty from diverse backgrounds

Desired Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is highly preferred

Compensation

  • Hourly wage of $11.00/hour

  • Round-trip coach airfare and related ground transportation Detroit to the program site

  • Program-provided housing

  • Some meals

  • GeoBlue-HTH insurance coverage for the duration of the program
