The Center for Global and Intercultural Study is currently seeking undergraduate students for the following positions:

CGIS Peer Advisor

Our office is currently looking to fill several vacancies for 2018-2019 academic year! Please note: CGIS Peer Advisor positions are only available to former CGIS participants that currently undergraduates. Past participants in non-CGIS programs are not eligible to apply.

Peer Advisor Job Description

Peer advisors serve as a support role for all functions of the CGIS office. This position includes clerical work in the CGIS office as well as serving in an outreach capacity to students throughout the University of Michigan.

Office Responsibilities

  • Provide initial advising to prospective study abroad students
  • Answer phone, walk-in and email inquiries from students, parents, partners and faculty
  • Support advisors by assembling files, making photocopies, entering data, etc.
  • Staff the reception desk periodically
  • Assist staff with additional tasks as needed
  • Special projects as assigned

Outreach Responsibilities

  • Assist with and present CGIS pre-departure orientations and other CGIS outreach events
  • Conduct regular First Steps sessions for prospective study abroad students
  • Create opportunities with campus clubs and organizations to conduct presentations about study abroad
  • Serve as a CGIS representative for on-campus events such as Campus Days, Festifall, Study Abroad Fair, New Student Orientation, Spring Welcome Day, etc.
  • Lead or assist with occasional work-related events may be asked of you (film discussions, serving as a tour guide for campus visitors, etc.)
  • Assistance with moving/distributing program catalogs and other marketing materials across campus
  • Assist in various social media projects including, but not limited to Instagram LIVE interviews, Instagram/Snapchat takeovers, etc.
  • Collaborating with Communications Specialist on developing Marketing related content and social media efforts
  • Special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Experience with public speaking and related equipment/technology
  • Experience with Social Media platforms
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Prezi
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with diverse groups
  • Strong communication and customer services skills
  • Demonstrated ability to remain flexible, positive, and organized  
  • Ability to take initiative and maintain student confidentiality
  • Peer Advisors must be alumni of a CGIS program

Dates & Deadlines

Students offered a position for this program during the 2018-2019 academic year will be required to attend a mandatory Training Orientation on Wednesday, August 29 from 9:00 AM - 5:00PM.
