LSA’s Center for Global and Intercultural Study (CGIS) is now accepting proposals for an LSA First-Year Writing Requirement (FYWR) course to be taught abroad.


CGIS is looking to develop a 6-week, 7-credit study abroad program to be piloted in Spring 2020 that would allow students to take two courses, one of which would be taught by a UM FYWR instructor and would fulfill the college’s FYWR Requirement (4 credits). The second course (3 credits) would be taught by a local instructor and would count toward the LSA’s Humanities distribution requirement.

Q. What countries can I submit proposals for?
A. For the pilot program, CGIS would prefer to develop a program in one of the 43 countries where we currently operate and already have a strong relationship with local partners:

  • Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Cambodia, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Cuba, Czech Republic (Czechia),  Denmark, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Madagascar, Morocco, New Zealand, Peru, Poland, Russia, Rwanda, Senegal, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Thailand, The Netherlands, Turks and Caicos, Uganda, UK, Vietnam. That said, CGIS will consider proposals based in other countries as well.

Q. How would my responsibilities as a study abroad instructor differ from being an instructor on campus?
A. Your responsibilities abroad will be limited to teaching the class. Please note that CGIS would expect the course to include more experiential elements than might be typical for a course taught at U-M, in order to take advantage of being on site.
This could mean meeting with local organizations, attending performances, conducting interviews with host families, touring specific attractions or locations, etc. The point is to offer an experience that could not be duplicated in a classroom at U-M.

Q. What’s a typical weekly schedule like?
A. Your four-credit class would meet four times a week for six weeks. The local class would be for three-credit hours and meet three times a week. A typical week might then be structured as follows (though some weeks would have to adapt for
orientation and local holidays):

  • Monday: UM class 10-12, local class 2-4
  • Tuesday: UM class 10-12, local class site visit 2-5
  • Wednesday: Free (for reading/homework/local exploration)
  • Thursday: UM class 10-1 (class held at local sites)
  • Friday: UM class 10-12, local class 2-4. 
    • This schedule would give students several days to complete assignments between classes, and would also keep them in town through Friday afternoon,
      impinging on their ability to leave town every weekend. (We encourage travel before and after the program, rather than throughout.)

Q. How many students can I expect?
A. CGIS requires a minimum of 12 students to run a program, and [IT or THE CLASS or ENROLLMENT] would be capped at a maximum of 18 to comply with FYWR class size limits.

Q. Do I have to speak the local language in order to put in a proposal to a non-English speaking country?
A. No, speaking the local language is not required. We will partner with a trusted, experienced on-site provider that will handle all of the logistical
arrangements and emergencies that might arise and that can arrange for interpreters or English-speaking guides as needed.

Q. What is compensation for this role?
A. Instructor’s airfare, housing, and program activity/excursion costs are covered by the program.
Instructors will receive an instructional salary.

Q. Can I bring family with me?
A. Instructors must notify CGIS of any family members or companions who accompany them. While instructors are permitted to have family members or other companions accompany them on-site, non-enrolled companions may not participate in any program-sponsored activities or travel. If any minors accompany the instructor, there must be another adult with no connection to the program responsible for caring for the minor(s) on a full-time basis. Dependents are not covered under the GeoBlue insurance under the Faculty and Staff blanket coverage policy, so the instructor will have to purchase that insurance separately. CGIS will budget for accommodations fo the Instructor only. Should the Instructor require more spacious lodging to accommodate traveling companions as well, s/he will be responsible for any difference in cost.

Q. What constitutes a strong proposal from the perspective of CGIS?
A.
We are looking for proposed courses that meet the following criteria:

  • The syllabus meets the FYWR Guidelines and Learning Goals and includes all elements of the FYWR Course Syllabus Planning Sheet. The final course syllabus must be approved by the Sweetland Center for Writing.
  • The classes are “place-based” and feature experiential learning activities that require students to engage with the local environment. 
  • Assignments are appropriate for the compressed timeline of a six-week class (e.g. short stories work better than 400-page novels).
