Faculty Roles with IMP Students

Faculty can work with Individual Major Program students in a number of ways:  

Review a Prospective Student’s Proposal for the Individual Major Program

The Faculty Proposal Review Form does not presuppose that you’ve taught the student in a class. Rather, it asks you to comment on the appropriateness of the proposed curriculum as someone with expert knowledge relative to their subject area.  Since Individualized Major Programs are inherently interdisciplinary, students are required to seek feedback from experts in multiple areas. You need not be an expert in all areas of the proposed curriculum to offer valuable feedback.

Serve as a Student's Faculty Mentor  

Students admitted to the Individual Major Program must have the ability to work independently at a high level. Day-to-day advising issues (e.g., course registration, progress towards degree) are handled by the program advisor. Each student, however, is required to have at least one continuing faculty mentor with whom they will consult throughout the completion of their major program. Students and faculty mentors are expected to meet at least once per academic term to discuss the student’s recent coursework and activities, focusing especially on the student’s intellectual development in understanding the core issues of her/his individualized major.

If you are willing to serve as an ongoing mentor, please indicate this on the Faculty Proposal Review Form. If you are unable or unwilling to serve in this ongoing capacity, you are still welcome to provide feedback on the curriculum during the proposal process.

Sponsor a Student's Senior Project

Each student is required to complete a senior capstone project during her/his final academic term. Designing this project is the major task of the ICP Senior Seminar (UC 455). If students wish to receive credit for their senior projects, they must have a faculty member willing to serve as instructor of record for an independent study. Faculty who initially review a proposal and/or serve as ongoing mentors may also serve in this capacity, but this is certainly not expected. By agreeing to serve as an ongoing mentor, the faculty member is not committing her/himself to supervise the senior project.
