Cuba's Reform Process in Historical Context

Talk by Mauricio Font

In this talk, Prof. Mauricio Font places the reforms that have taken place in Cuba since Raúl Castro became President in the historical context of various past attempts at reform.

Mauricio Font (Ph.D., University of Michigan) is Director of the Bildner Center for Western Hemisphere Studies and Professor of sociology at The Graduate Center and Queens College, CUNY. His most recent publication is Handbook of Contemporary Cuba: Economy, Politics, Civil Society and Globalization (2013, co-edited) and is working on its second volume, Handbook on Cuban History, Literature, and the Arts (Paradigm, forthcoming). He has published essays and other volumes on Cuba.  Professor Font is also author of Coffee and Transformation in São Paulo, Brazil (2010) and Transforming Brazil: A Reform Era in Perspective (2003).  He is co-editor of The Brazilian State: Debate and Agenda (2011), Cuban Counterpoints: The Legacy of Fernando Ortiz (2005), La República Cubana y José Martí (1902-2002) (2005), among others. He is currently working on The State and the Private Sector in Latin America (Palgrave, forthcoming).
