"This summer, to prepare for my first year in the PhD program, I took an intensive course in Ancient Greek to get a headstart on my language learning! I applied to UM with an interest in studying how Classical Greek dramas, poetry, and mythology have been received in postcolonial work. Though I mostly want to work with Classical receptions, I find that being able to directly compare the source adds a totally different dimension. The intensive course was vigorous work—getting through an entire year’s worth of Ancient Greek lessons in six weeks meant a lot of hours spent in Zoom classes, and even more hours for individual work. I managed to fill nearly two journals with notes and exercises. Although I still have a long way to go, the work feels worth it; I realize how far I’ve come from where I struggled to read Greek letters just a few months ago!"
