Major Requirements (Effective Fall 2017)

Students pursuing a major in Communication Studies must complete 8 prerequisite credits, 4 upper-level writing credits, 3 senior capstone credits, and 2 additional elective credits.

Program requirements include:

Communication Studies Prerequisite Courses

Comm 101: The Mass Media
4 credits. Requires freshman, sophomore, or junior status.

Comm 102: Media Processes and Effects.
4 credits. Requires freshman, sophomore, or junior status.

 

ULWR Requirement

One course, 4 credits, from courses numbered COMM 350 - 399. 

Senior Capstone Requirement

One course, 3 credits, from courses numbered COMM 450 - 499. 

  • Only one capstone may be counted for credit toward the major and the degree requirements
  • Must be declared COMM senior major to enroll

Communication Study Elective Requirements

This requirement allows students to choose advanced Communication Studies courses according to individual interest areas.

  • A minimum of 22 elective credits (not included in ULWR or capstone requirement) from courses numbered COMM 200 - 449
  • No more than 8 credits may come from 200-level courses
  • Comm 321: Undergraduate Internship cannot be used to satisfy this requirement
  • A maximum of three credits from Comm 322: Faculty Directed Undergraduate Research Practicum, Comm 441: Independent Reading or Comm 442: Independent Research, may be applied to this requirement
  • A maximum of three credits from Comm 491: Senior Honors Seminar I or Comm 492: Senior Honors Seminar II may apply to this requirement (additional credits may be applied to the general bachelor’s degree requirements)
