Internships

The department encourages and supports Communication and Media majors in their efforts to acquire internships for vocational skills training that supplement their academic coursework. Although not a requirement for the major, internships are strongly encouraged to provide students with hands-on skills and experience. The department does not place students in internships. Many students participate in internships in the fields of broadcasting, journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing, and other media-related areas.

Additionally, during the academic year students interested in broadcasting or journalism seek opportunities for skills experience through work at the student-run television station, WOLV-TV; the student-operated radio station, WCBN; or the student-run newspaper, The Michigan Daily.

Internship for credits

The LSA Opportunity Hub offers three Applied Liberal Arts (ALA) courses to help students meet their goals: ALA 125, ALA 225, and ALA 325. Identifying and reflecting on how you want to use your education are central to each course.

In ALA 125, students learn how to define their goals, search for opportunities, and navigate the application process. In ALA 225, students earn academic credit by participating in an online, interactive reflection process about their internship. And in ALA 325, juniors and seniors prioritize individual goals and perfect their job materials, like resume, cover letter, or grad school admissions essay.

Note that Communication and Media no longer offers academic credits for internships.

Internship Funding

The department of Communication and Media offers funding for students that have secured an unpaid internship during the summer. More information and application can be found under the "Summer Awards" section on Departmental Funding.
