The department encourages and supports Communication and Media majors in their efforts to acquire internships for vocational skills training that supplement their academic coursework. Although not a requirement for the major, internships are strongly encouraged to provide students with hands-on skills and experience. The department does not place students in internships. Many students participate in internships in the fields of broadcasting, journalism, public relations, advertising, marketing, and other media-related areas.

Additionally, during the academic year students interested in broadcasting or journalism seek opportunities for skills experience through work at the student-run television station, WOLV-TV; the student-operated radio station, WCBN; or the student-run newspaper, The Michigan Daily.
