About
Fan is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Communication and Media. His research is at the intersections of political communication, computational social science, and digital politics. He adopts statistical and computational methods to understand the consequences, benefits, and risks of new technologies and data infrastructures.
Broadly construed, he is interested in: 1) the diffusion and manipulation of political information on social media, and their effects on political participation; 2) the use of machine learning algorithms and data science techniques in communication research; and 3) the roles that Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and big data play in shaping governance and surveillance.
Fan received B.A. in Public Administration from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and M.Sc.in Political Communication from the University of Glasgow.
