Daniel Meyerend is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Communication and Media at the University of Michigan. He holds a bachelor’s degree in English and Religious Studies from Multnomah University and a Master’s degree in English from Idaho State University. His research revolves around critical media studies, race and ethnicity, Black popular culture, and the affordances of digital platforms. In particular, he examines constructions and representations of Black and mixed-race identities in popular culture, how they are mediated by digital technologies, and how these identities speak to social and political inequalities. Alongside his research at the University of Michigan, he has also worked at the Milan Federal Prison in Michigan where he taught college courses to incarcerated men obtaining their associates degree.
