Ph.D. in Classical Studies
About
Eleanor Choi (she/her) earned a B.A. from Wellesley College in 2017, with a major in Music and a minor in History, and completed a Post-Baccalaureate in Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania in 2019 while working at the Kislak Center for Rare Books and Manuscripts. During this time, she participated in excavations at Colchester and Ancient Thouria. In 2021, she received her M.A. in Classics from the University of Notre Dame, where she taught Beginning and Intermediate Latin. Her Master’s thesis examined the historiographical treatment of interstate relations in Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War and sought to apply this treatment of diplomatic rhetoric to a historical understanding of fifth-century Greek perceptions of their inter-poleis condition.
Eleanor’s research interests lie primarily in fifth-century Greek historiography and warfare, including the dynamics of alliances, historical agency, and the relation of speech to power. She is also interested in ethno-cultural studies and reception of Greek classical culture, especially tragedy, in the Hellenistic period.
