My goal is to investigate how chlorophyll is modified to absorb a broader range of light and how organisms build and tailor sunscreen pigments that provide protection from harmful UV-radiation. As each of these processes requires microbes to intricately translate environmental signals into a response, I also aim to gain molecular insight into how light-dependent gene regulation is accomplished. My research proposal encompasses the breadth of my training, which has centered on using anaerobic techniques to understand how metalloproteins function in biosynthetic pathways.
