On-campus component: ALA 211: Addressing Critical Global Issues (2 credits)— In this course students explore critical global issues including human rights, peace, and ecology through case studies and talks by guest experts. In addition, students participate in collaborative group internships with partner organizations located around the world that are addressing these and other critical global issues.
Off-campus component: ALA 209-002 (2 credits)— Students will learn about some of the ways people in Japan are thinking about, finding connections between, and addressing peace and ecology -- two of the pressing global issues of our times. By visiting sites of historical and cultural significance to these issues in the Japanese context, meeting people in the Japanese peace community, and visiting an experiential eco-village, students will build their intercultural competencies and discover and experience new models of engaged global citizenship around peace and environmental sustainability.
