The program begins with an orientation in New Delhi covering topics such as Indian culture, gender, and health and safety. Students also visit various historical and cultural sites in the capital while getting to know their fellow students. In Varanasi, students can earn 15-18 credits per semester by taking two core courses; such as Gender, Caste, Community: Urban Geography in Context and Ritual, Pilgrimage, and Pluralism: the Practice of Religion in India. Students will also take a tutorial course, a Hindi language course, and participate in directed field study. Tutorial offerings include a variety of studio and performing arts such as dance, music, and painting. The program includes a 4-day traveling seminar to cultural locations in the region where students can apply course content and gain a more in-depth understanding of India. Students live in a family-run student guesthouse, in an apartment with a local roommate, or with a host family.
