The Japan Center for Michigan Universities (JCMU) is located in Hikone, a sister city of Ann Arbor. The program provides intensive Japanese language training from beginning to advanced levels as well as coursework in other areas, such as social science, environmental science, and humanities courses focusing on Japan. Each 15-week semester, students can earn 12-15 credits. Students enroll in at least one elective course (taught in English) in addition to the Intensive Japanese language course. Electives include courses such as Japanese Culture and Society: Contemporary Social Issues, and Identity and Second Language Acquisition. JCMU organizes field trips and cultural encounters to help students engage with the local community and experience Japanese culture and life. Students have the option of living in a JCMU Residence Hall or doing a homestay. There is also the opportunity to participate in a university club, join cultural activities and use university facilities.
