Cusco’s inhabitants are descended from the Quechua-speaking groups that formed the core of the Inca Empire. Quechua was the language of the Inca Empire, and at the time of the Spanish conquest, it was the lingua franca of the Andes. Today, it is the most widely-spoken indigenous language of the Americas, with some 10 million speakers in Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Chile, and Argentina. It is also an essential language for anyone interested in researching regional humanities and social sciences. Earn 9 credits on this 7-week intensive language program. Experience total cultural immersion through stays in selected Peruvian homes in Cusco, all of which have Quechua-speaking members. On-site staff arrange travel to fiestas and traditional events where students will be able to practice their language skills.
